Calculate physical density
Measure the full shipping unit—including pallet, overhang, and load height—and total gross weight. Divide kilograms by cubic metres for kg/m³, or pounds by cubic feet for lb/ft³. Mixed pieces can be totalled if their combined weight and combined outside volume are both complete.
Reweigh or remeasure when packaging changes. Small dimension errors on a large shipment can materially change density.
Keep classification separate
Some transport tariffs use density as one input, but a density result does not by itself determine a commodity description, freight class, or rate. Handling difficulty, stowability, liability, value, packaging, and specific product provisions may matter.
Use the carrier's current tariff, your contract, and an accurate commodity description. If classification affects a material quote, ask the carrier or a qualified specialist to confirm it in writing.
- Do not label a density lookup as a guaranteed class.
- Keep the measurement record and photographs.
- Use gross, not net, shipment weight.
Use density operationally
Even where it does not set the rate, density helps compare packaging options, trailer cube, warehouse utilisation, and unusually light or heavy loads. Treat it as a consistent physical KPI.
